I was thrilled to attend Sutton Real Estate Company's ribbon-cutting for Harbor Street Lofts at 700-710 Emerson Ave. this past week. This adaptive reuse project transformed an 111-year old former knitting mill into a mixed income loft apartment building. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 and retained many original details from the factory including hardwood floors and exposed brick walls.
I am proud of the role I played in bringing this project to fruition. During my time at the city I helped the development team through the permitting process and supported their efforts to secure historic and low income housing tax credits. 35 of the 40 apartments are reserved for people who earn less than 60 percent of the area’s median income, with the remaining 5 apartments rented at market rate with no income restrictions.
As Mayor, I will continue to be a strong advocate for historic preservation and mixed income development to ensure everyone in our city has access to quality, affordable housing.
